So, I want to first start off by saying that I've just recently gotten my first acceptance letter for a poem I submitted, and it's going to be posted on the Shine! Journal site in October...

With that being said, I'm having a hard time trying to find help with my poetry.  Not that the forums here are bad, (there are a lot of great people) but in the critique section for Poetry here, there aren't many posters, and only a certain level of advice can be given, and I've found that I'm one of the people that gets turned to when giving advice.  So I tried to scour the web today to see if there were any good forums that someone could try to get help in shaping their poetic voice and style on, and I'm coming up with nothing.

All of the forums that kept coming up didn't meet any of the criteria I was looking for.  First, I want the forum to be password protected, like this one.  That way after I post my piece, I can firmly know that I can send it out for publication because it hasn't been publicly posted.  Every site I took a look at, I was able to view the poems posted just by clicking.  I didn't have to register to view anything.  That's a complete out of the question for me because I want to be able to send anything I'm working on out for publication.

Second, the work has to be top notch or at least pretty good, and the advice given has to be real advice, not just "I liked it, I didn't like it, etc"  For most of them that's all I could see.  Sub-par work with no real advice given.  And one site that I did see good advice, didn't meet the password requirement, and it didn't look like many people posted either...

So, I'm wondering, does anyone know where a budding poet can finely craft their work?  I want to be able to expand some of my style, and get more publication credits under my belt...

Thanks in advance if anyone has advice...

-John

You aren't going to get much of any help with poetry on fora.  I'm not sure anyone can help you.  Not you, specifically, you the poet.  If anyone could, it would be a gifted poet who is willing to mentor or teach and also has teaching skills.  Those three factors seldom collide.

I'd suggest that you read books written by poets and good creative writing teachers about the craft and read, read, read poetry.  I'm sure you can find journals and/or literary publications with analytic material about poetry.

The reason I say that feedback from general audiences is little help is because poetry is so personal, both in its creation and in the eyes/ears/mind of the beholder/listener/consciousness.  I am a poet, and adore certain poems, but I cannot tell you why I love those poems or what I've done in my creations "worked".

Good luck!

John,

I agree with georganna, you would need to find a mentor. Someone who recognises your voice and who can draw it out. Check some of the universities that excell in their literary programs. Ask them for help. Also reading as many poetic works which are close to your own goals/style will help you to hone in on your own voice. And as Georgana said, reading educational books for poets, workbooks and such. Also do you have subscriptions to the best poetry magazines? If not, do what you can to get them. They have loads of great information in them for poets. Poets & Writers is a good one. If you don't, I have a couple of those I've finished with. I would be willing to mail them to you. If you'd like to have them just pm me an address.

All the best,
Elizabeth
PS I just ordered one of Ted Kooser's books for myself: The home repair manual for the beginning poet. I'm getting a used version through amazon for $9 total.

i'm a somewhat-published, fairly full time poet myself and i've mentored many aspiring ones, so if you're looking for ongoing help/mentoring, drop me a line any time and take a look at the work on my site, to see the standard to which i hold my mentees...

love and hugs, maia

Thanks guys...

It's not like I'm trying to find an easy way out. I know that I'll have to do some research and reading on my own. It's just that world of poetry can be quite daunting with the many differnt forms and structures and types. And each publication seems to stress some more than others, and honestly before writing any poetry I didn't have much experience with it. I had read some in school, but most of my critical theory and analysis has been just purely in literature, and not poetry. So I'm a little overwhelmed when it comes to that realm right now...

Geo... I'm going to try to do more research, that I promise. I'm just worried that I might get too muddled in the way if you know what I mean...

Elizabeth... Don't have any subs yet, have been reading what I can get my hands on. I might take you up on that offer btw...

Maia... Looking at your site now.... I also may take you up on the offer. I'm going to see what your standard is, and I'll get back to you on that. Thanks!

I suggest finding a good poetry group in your area, particularly one that offers critique and/or workshopping. I don't know about the poetry scene in your area, but there are several in mine (Philly/South Jersey) - some even publish their own journal. There's nothing like "face time" to get confidence and constructive feedback to improve work. As far as books, I recommend "Writing Down the bones" by Natalie Goldberg and "The Poet's Companion" by Kim Addonizio and Dorianne Laux. Both have great advice on writing and offer writing prompts too.

i agree with jackbugs. i recently joined a local poetry group myself, and found it incredibly helpful. if that doesn't work for you, feel free to pm your work to me. i promise to give honest but nice critique, if you would care to do the same for me.
